SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2018, ALL POINTS EAST HAS HOSTED MANY DIVERSE AND IMPRESSIVE LINEUPS, WITH THIS YEAR BEING NO DIFFERENT. We caught up with Ray Bull who delivered an incredible, high-energy performance at this year’s festival.

PETTY: Tonight marks the end of your album tour, what have been your tour highlights?

AARON: We were on tour for a little over a month in the States and then we had a month off in between so this is the cherry on top at the end. It’s funny, travelling America, it’s so different in every city but it’s all America, so there’s something the same about it. Coming here and…[feeling] the novelty of travel in a place you’re not as used to.

PETTY: Your most recent album is called Please Stop Laughing, what’s been your funniest tour memory?

AARON: We have a lot of them. We’re constantly coming up with different bits and we do a lot of word play. We were just sitting around the picnic table for probably twenty minutes coming up with different names for All Points East. Like have you heard of that other one? They don’t have much music, it’s mostly food– All Points Feast. Then we get caught in a loop.

TUCKER: You have to have been driving for eight hours to find it funny.

PETTY: I found it funny. I am sleep deprived…

TUCKER: You need to have had no sleep, yeah.

PETTY: What would be served at All Points Feast?

TUCKER: Probably McDonalds would headline or something.

AARON: Or Renaissance fair food. Like a big turkey leg I could see at All Points Feast.

TUCKER: Turkey leg headline

AARON: A big vat of beans maybe.

PETTY: Which kind of feeds into my next question

AARON: The beans question. We always get the beans question.

PETTY: British food can be quite divisive. Have you tried any food here that you didn’t think you would like, but won you over?

AARON: Last time we were here I maybe explored the traditional cuisine more. We had like mashed peas?

TUCKER: Mushy peas. And we had Guinness pie and fish and chips and that was kind of enough.

AARON: But I think we realised this time that the thing we can’t get in New York is a proper Turkish doner kebab so we’ve just been getting doner wraps for every meal.

TUCKER: But he already knew he was going to like it.

AARON: It’s true. Oh! Last time we had, what are like the little pancake things?

TUCKER: Crumpets. Yeah that one I was like what’s all the fuss about and then I was like, wow.

PETTY: What are you taking home with you?

AARON: A ton of drugs and rare fruit and bacteria. I don’t have much space in my suitcase beyond stuff like that.

TUCKER: I still haven’t gotten much yet, but I’m taking home the memories of being here.

PETTY: What’s your favourite conspiracy theory?

TUCKER: Well there’s that whole conspiracy that the Earth is round.

PETTY: People believe that?

TUCKER: Yeah there’s a whole round earth theory and those round earthers are pretty crazy.

AARON: I guess one I’m on recently is that we don’t hold our memories in our heads but they exist outside of us.

TUCKER: There are always cool theories about how they managed to build the pyramids. The coolest conspiracy is that aliens built a lot of that stuff. It’s also kind of harmful in a way, but it’s just cool to think about aliens doing it. But I guess I don’t really believe it.

AARON: I believe that big corporations came up with recycling to put it on the individual instead of having industries be responsible for it and now we’re drowning in plastic.

PETTY: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

TUCKER: Our pre-show ritual is kind of just being like, you know what? Let’s just go up there and have a good show.

AARON: I think for festivals it’s fun because it’s sort of just like [running] around and [seeing] how much free stuff you can get and what you can gain access to.

PETTY: How about after the show?

AARON: I think it’s always funny when you’re playing the last song on the last spot of the tour because it’s this weird heady thing where you’re like, okay, this is the last one and then as you’re ending you’re like I don’t know when our next show is currently. So it’s like there’s something very weird with time playing the last song.

PETTY: I guess the post-concert comedown is so much more intense when you’re the one playing.

TUCKER: It’s maybe sad, but it’s kind of a lot of relief. Like, okay, we did the thing. There was so much anticipation for all of this and now that’s the last chord.
