SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2018, ALL POINTS EAST HAS HOSTED MANY DIVERSE AND IMPRESSIVE LINEUPS, WITH THIS YEAR BEING NO DIFFERENT. We caught up with Mouth Culture who delivered an incredible, high-energy performance at this year’s festival.

PETTY: How does it feel to be playing on a lineup with Twenty One Pilots?

MASON: Unbelievable to be honest.

JACK: Pretty surreal. Yeah, it’s probably not sunk in yet. I think when we’re watching them later we’ll probably get a bit teary.

TODD: Yeah, it feels like a milestone for us because it’s kind of a different festival to what we’ve done before isn’t it really? I know it’s a rock day but it still feels like a new territory, which is exciting for us because we want to sort of branch off in all areas.

JACK: Well that’s one of the things about Twenty One Pilots, they don’t stay in one lane with music and that’s a big thing with our music, we can’t really just stay in one lane. We do what we like and it sounds how it sounds.

TODD: But we always indicate!

PETTY: Where are you indicating next?

MASON: Well we debuted it today. It was a very very special moment for us. I think this whole Summer has been leading up to what we did today and what’s about to come.

JACK: What did we do today?

MASON: We played our new single “Growing Pains” for the first time.

JACK: We’re all in the mindset of “we can’t say anything, we can’t say anything,” but we’ve been told today “you can say something!”

MASON: It was again, pretty surreal. We got to play…I can’t give anything away…

TODD: Our brand new song that’s coming out with one of our childhood heroes from a band that we listened to growing up.

JACK: This is Max Helyer from You Me at Six.

MASON: Again, we always avoid context.

JACK: We’re too secretive.

MASON: Yeah Max came out and got to play the song and it was just, it was a real moment to get to play a stage like that at a festival like this with someone who— we just got asked a question “what was the first band t-shirt you got?” and mine was genuinely You Me at Six and I’m sat here and the guitarist’s just played with us. It’s pretty mad.

PETTY: If you were curating a music festival, who would be on the lineup?

TODD: I’d have Wunderhorse.

MASON: Turnstile, Queens of the Stone Age.

JACK: Third Eye Blind.

TODD: Let’s do one more. Major headliner.

MASON: We’ve got to say Paramore for you (to Todd).

TODD: But we’ve done rock bands.

PETTY: There doesn’t have to be a theme.

JACK: Whatever we like?

MASON: Sabrina Carpenter or Olivia Dean.

TODD: And Sam Fender.

JACK: I’d have to say Eminem.

PETTY: Where would this festival be?

TODD: Let’s go with Leicester.

JACK: Yeah we’ll have it in Leicester. Do you know what? I’d have it in the multi-storey car park next to John Lewis and each level would be a different genre.

PETTY: Who are your most unexpected influences?

MASON: Jack’s big into R&B.

JACK: Tori Lanez, love him.

MASON: Even though we’ve listed rock bands, we’re kind of into anything really.

TODD: Drake, Post Malone.

JACK: SZA. Oh my god, SZA. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

MASON: Wolf Alice.

TODD: Dua Lipa.

MASON: Hard Life, our studio friends and Heart Sauce, our other studio friends.

JACK: Michael Bublé

TODD: Only at Christmas

JACK: No, all year! My Spotify would arguably say brown noise

PETTY: Is that a band or actual brown noise?

JACK: Genuinely brown noise, it kills me every year. I always forget to click the podcast version and it registers it as a song.

PETTY: What have been your favourite album releases this year?

MASON: For me, it’s a tie between Hopes and Fears by Keane or The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance.

PETTY: Did they rerelease it?

MASON: Oh of this year!

JACK: I’d say it’s got to be DMA’s and then Fontaines’ new record that’s coming out.
