FROM THE MOMENT MELANIE MARTINEZ WALKED ONTO THE STAGE, IT WAS OBVIOUS THIS WASN’T GOING TO BE A TYPICAL ARENA SHOW— On Friday night, The O2 in London was transformed for Martinez’s HADES: THE SACRIFICE tour, with the singer bringing the world of her latest album to life through music, striking visuals and theatrical staging.
The set leaned heavily into HADES, giving songs such as “GARBAGE”, “IS THIS A CULT?”, “POSSESSION” and “THE PLAGUE” plenty of room to breathe. Despite being newer material, they were met with huge reactions from the crowd, who seemed just as familiar with the latest songs as they were with Martinez’s older favourites.
Visually, the show was just as ambitious. The lighting, costumes and screens constantly changed throughout the set, moving between lively, darker scenes and quieter moments. The production never felt completely still, which helped keep the atmosphere shifting as the night went on.
The B-stage was one of the most effective parts of the show. After spending the beginning of the night surrounded by a huge production, Martinez suddenly appeared much closer to the crowd. With thousands of fans packed around the smaller stage, those moments felt more personal and offered a welcome change of pace from the scale of the main set.
As the show progressed, the darker side of HADES became more noticeable. Martinez fully embraced the theatrical nature of the album, making the performance feel like more than a series of songs played one after another. The visuals and staging gave the music a sense of place, creating a world that the audience could step into for the evening.
The crowd was a huge part of that atmosphere. Fans sang along throughout the set, not only to the songs but seemingly to every familiar moment of the show. Their reactions to the staging and visuals were just as loud as their response to the music, showing how closely Martinez’s music and visual identity have become linked for her audience.
By the time the end arrived, the energy had begun to settle. It gave the night a more reflective ending before the lights finally came back up and the O2 returned to normal.
What makes Martinez’s live shows stand out is that the music is never presented on its own. The costumes, characters, visuals and staging all form part of the experience, and HADES: THE SACRIFICE is a particularly strong example of that. At The O2, Martinez created a show that felt deliberately built around the world of the album, giving fans far more than a straightforward night of live music.
